Why Start Freelance Writing is becoming Make a Living Writing

11/02/09

I'm changing the name of my blog from Start Freelance Writing to Make A Living Writing.

Why? As I began mentoring writers to help them make more money in their writing careers, I discovered that many of my clients weren't trying to break in to freelance writing. They had been writing for years -- they just weren't making a good living at it. So my original blog name didn't reach out to this group of writers...yet they clearly could benefit from my free blog advice and from my mentoring services.

I also discovered that the most intuitive URL for the phrase Start Freelance Writing is already taken, by someone who seems kinda scammy to me -- one Mike Arnaki. He has no links to his own bio or Web site, he offers no clips or portfolio to prove he knows anything about freelance writing...but he's selling a 76-page ebook for $17.

Also says it includes "over 70 thoroughly researched international industry contacts which you can pitch to" immediately upon downloading the book. Since in my experience only the most experienced writers can effectively remotely service international clients, that also made me suspicious. I've attempted to contact him via email but he hasn't responded. Not sure he really exists.

He seems to have no site of his own, and he seems to run several of these ebook marketing sites. He's also teaching people how to make a living as a freelance photographer on another site. On both sites, he promises to teach you how to make $200-$250 a day...not exactly impressive. I teach people how to make many times that rate...so not a site or guy I'd want to be associated with.

Between these two factors, I decided to search for a name that would better describe the whole audience of writers I want to reach -- all writers who want to make a good living from their work.

Make A Living Writing sums up what I teach people to do. I want writers to be fairly compensated and enjoy a decent quality of life, and I teach them how to shun content mills and find good-paying markets.

So that's the new name. Appreciate your feedback on it, and watch for additional posts to come under the Make A Living Writing banner.
